What They Say About Co-Hive

Hear it from the people who have lived it: participants, parents and partners.

As a parent, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to send my son to a place where the expectation is he WILL succeed. I can see how empowering it is for him to be able to build his skills in such a dynamic environment.

-Linda, Parent

My daughter developed her confidence since being at Co-Hive. She’s done various different courses and is now able to cook simple meals for herself, which she couldn’t before, or didn’t have the confidence to do. It’s been a very good experience, and we know she’s in good hands.

-Rozanne, Parent

Big shoutout to Co-Hive for their unique programs that are helping Will develop independence and confidence.

Great work, Co-Hive

-Georgina Parent of Will

He’s getting mature and growing as an adult but Co-Hive has really helped him round that out and can make connections with socialising.

His overall independence and maturity has really improved.

-Jason Parent of Ajay

FAQs

What best describes you?

When did Co-Hive open?

Co-Hive launched its first program on 5 February 2024.

Since then, we’ve been growing into a vibrant, welcoming hub for participants, families, and carers!

Why was Co-Hive Founded?

Co-Hive was founded by Kim, who recognised the need for a supportive space for young people with disability transitioning from school—or, in some cases, not completing school. Many of these individuals had the potential to live successful, independent lives but lacked opportunities to build the necessary skills, make choices about their future, and feel part of a community.Co-Hive was created to empower, support, and connect participants on their journey to independence.

What foundation / theory is Co-Hive based on?

Co-Hive is built on Self-Determination Theory, which helps individuals thrive by focusing on three key elements:

  • Competence: Building the skills and knowledge needed for success.
  • Autonomy: Empowering participants to make their own choices and take control of their lives.
  • Connectedness: Creating a sense of belonging and fostering meaningful relationships. In addition, we:
  • Work closely with families, allied health professionals, and communities as part of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Collaborate with other disability and government organisations to expand participants’ networks.
  • Focus on education, not therapy. Our programs are led by educators, who help participants upskill, grow in confidence, and connect with others.

Do I need NDIS funding to attend Co-Hive?

It is preferred that participants have NDIS funding, as our programs align closely with NDIS goals. However, participants can also pay fees directly if they do not have funding.

Please note: Co-Hive can only invoice participants with NDIS funding if they are self-managed or plan-managed. Unfortunately, we cannot invoice NDIA managed participants.

If you’re unsure about your funding or payment options, our team is happy to help.

What makes Co-Hive different from other post-school disability providers?

Co-Hive stands out because of its strong foundation in Self-Determination Theory and its educational approach.

Here’s what makes us unique:

  • Educators, not therapists: We build participants’ capacity and independence rather than doing tasks for them.
  • Skills-focused: We teach the skills needed to become productive, independent members of society.
  • Collaborative: We work closely with families, allied health professionals, and community organisations to provide holistic support.

Our focus is on long-term growth, creating meaningful and lasting outcomes for participants.

My child is lonely. Can they just come for social meetups?

No, participants need to be enroled in at least one program (current or previous) before joining our social meetups.

This ensures we have the opportunity to build your child’s capacity to connect with others and develop meaningful social skills through structured programs first.
